History
2007 will mark the Downtown Lincoln Association's 40th anniversary year. Originally established in
1967 as a merchants' association by downtown retailers who recognized the need for an organization
to serve downtown's unique needs, DLA has evolved to a multi-faceted organization supporting a wide
range of programs and activities. Today's organization reports to a Board of Directors elected
by downtown property owners.
There are many milestone dates in DLA's history. In 1978, city government and downtown property
owners created the first Business Improvement District (BID) to maintain the downtown streetscape.
In 1989, following the exodus of more than one million square feet of retail, downtown business
leaders established two more BIDs to ensure that DLA would continue to lead downtown to a new future.
